Organizational Volunteer Opportunities: Board of Directors

The Board of Directors: attend meetings; manage and govern the affairs of the corporation of Tillsonburg & District Multi-Service Centre and ensure that staffing and facilities are appropriate for its services;
develop and review the Values, Mission, Vision, Goals, Objectives and Strategic Plan of the Centre; develop bylaws, comply with the bylaws and applicable legislation, regulations and Policies and Procedures accordingly
within available resources that meet the needs of the Community; monitor, evaluate and continually improve all programs and services within the tri-county communities MSC serves; ensure that the Community is informed about the
Centre and its services.
A commitment of 3 years is preferred.
Board meetings are held monthly.
Interested persons are interviewed by the Nominating Committee and, if approved, are eligible to be elected to the Board at the Annual General Meeting held every June.
Training consists of a Board Orientation, a tour of the facilities and a review of the programs and services of Tillsonburg & District Multi-Service Centre (MSC) with a current Board Director and/or Executive Director.
Committees of Tillsonburg & District Multi-Service Centre include the Governance Committee and the Resource Committee. A commitment of one year is expected and meeting schedules vary with each committee.
The Governance Committee:

This committee coordinates and monitors Board Goals and Objectives in relation to the Strategic Plan and also acts as the Board Nominating Committee.
Acts as the search and hiring committee for senior management staff of the Centre and evaluates the performance of these staff as needed.
The committee recommends for approval to the Board of Directors the following:

This committee advises the Board on the financial and human resource implications of the Centre's Strategic Plan and recommends to the Board annual operating budgets and capital forecasts.
They also review the ongoing financial statements of the Centre and advises the Board as required on financial matters including: endowments, investments, contracts, banking, insurance, consultants, wage rates, employee benefits,
and fundraising strategies.
| Fundraising Volunteers |
These committee members attend, plan and coordinate specific fundraising events and report to the Board regularly. They actively recruit other fundraising members from the community and the Board.
| Literacy Tutor |
The Adult Basic Literacy program is designed to help adults improve their literacy skills. Literacy can be defined as having the necessary skills to read, write and spell. The assistance provided helps adults to become more independent and functional in the community.
Volunteer Tutor Role
The volunteer tutor is matched on a one-to-one basis with an adult who needs improvement in reading, writing and spelling skills.
A commitment of 2 hours per week is required for a period of one year. Duties would include providing lessons, completion of a student training plan and completion of monthly reports. Staff provides ongoing support.
The screening process includes a completion of a data sheet, interview, statement of confidentiality, and a police check.
A mandatory two-day tutor-training workshop prepares volunteers for the tutoring role.

Observing how his/her student can handle day-to-day affairs as related to literacy (e.g., writing a cheque, reading a letter, etc.)

| Meals on Wheels |
The Meals on Wheels program has been operating in and around the Tillsonburg area for over 20 years delivering hot, nutritious meals and acting as a friendly visit to many seniors. The meals are delivered by the volunteers Monday through Friday year round, allowing them to directly see the rewards of the services that they provide. With the help of the volunteer, many seniors are able to maintain their quality of life and remain independent members of the community.

Volunteers in this program drive eligible individuals to appointments, on errands, etc. Mileage is re-imbursed.
