Bookkeeping Certificate Program

Program Overview

This is a 23 week (459 hour) course designed to prepare the student for positions in both smaller, service-type organizations and larger manufacturing businesses where additional management accounting skills would seem more relevant.

Successful students should be able to:

  • Maintain a general ledger and supporting ledgers.
  • Prepare, analyze and interpret financial statements.
  • Organize financial and management accounting information to assist with an organization's decision process.
  • Operate in a computer environment.
  • Utilize current software technology to prepare, analyze and present financial data.
Evaluations
  • The program consists of 9 courses.
  • Each of the courses requires a passing grade of 60%.
  • You will be assessed throughout the program through exercises, assignments and tests.
  • The method of evaluation is determined by the individual instructors.
  • Upon successful completion of all nine courses, you will receive a Fanshawe College - Bookkeeping Certificate and you will be invited to attend our graduation ceremony in the fall.
  • Although there are no eligibility requirements to enroll in this program, we strongly recommend you have prior experience or an aptitude for accounting/bookkeeping.
Two Methods of Payment
  1. 1 installment of $1870.00 on September 30th
  2. 2 installments as follows:

  4. November 4th ($852.00)
Note:
  • If paying in installments, there is an extra $100.00 fee.
  • This program is NOT eligible for OSAP. Applicants may be eligible for additional funding through HRDC or social services.
  • Refund Policy: Students will be eligible for a full refund minus an administration fee up to and including the 3rd day of class. No refund will be issued after the start of the 3rd scheduled class.
Textbooks
  • Textbooks will need to be purchased for the various courses.
  • Approximate cost of the textbooks will be $600.00 to $800.00
  • Textbooks may be purchased as the program progresses - they do not have to be purchased all at once.
What Now?
  • If you are on E.I. you should talk to your Employment Counselor first and let him/her know of your intentions.
  • Registration forms are available and can be completed now or returned at a later date.
  • Take your registration form with your payment to the Fanshawe College office either in Tillsonburg or Woodstock.
  • Acceptance into the program is based on the first 15 paid registrations.
  • No payment is processed until after the final registration date or until the course is full.
  • After 15 applicants, your name will be put on a waiting list.
Bookkeeping Certificate Program Course Description

Introduction to Payroll: This course introduces students to the payroll process and practice topics including responsibilities and duties of a payroll clerk, completing employment related forms, overview of legislation related to the payroll function.

Business Microcomputer Applications: An introduction to the use of microcomputers in today's business environment. Computer concepts covering hardware, data communications and software. Hands on experience will be developed using Microsoft Office 2000.

Excel Spreadsheets:This course provides a comprehensive presentation of Microsoft Excel 2000. Topics include formulas, functions, charting, formatting worksheets, absolute cell references, working with large worksheets, what-if analysis, financial functions, data tables, amortization schedules, cell protection, worksheet database manipulation Pivot Charts, Pivot Tables, and importing data.

Personal Taxation: This course has been designed to provide the student with a basic knowledge of the structure, purpose and administration of the federal income tax system. It includes the determination of net income from employment and property.

ACCPAC Plus Accounting: ACCPAC is a hands-on computer applications course, designed to enable the student to become familiar with the day-to-day operation of the ACCPAC Plus accounting system. In addition, the student will be exposed to other features of the software, for example, importing and exporting data and entering and maintaining budget data and specifications.

Applied Simply Accounting for Windows: Simply Accounting is a hands-on computer applications course, designed to enable the student to become familiar with the day-to-day operations of computerized accounting systems. In addition, the student will be exposed to other features of the software, for example, bank reconciliation, budgeting, payroll, tax remittances, period end process, project costing and inventory tracking.

Cost Accounting I: An introductory management accounting course that introduces the student to management accounting terms and purposes, manufacturing statements, job costing, process costing, responsibility accounting, cost/volume/profit analysis and budgets.

Principles of Accounting I: The course introduces the student to the subject of Accounting and is designed to take them through the accounting bookkeeping cycle, including knowledge of: the accounting profession and how to analyze and record business transactions, adjusting & closing entries & preparation of financial statements, accounting for merchandising operations and inventory valuation, the use of special journals, subsidiary ledgers and internal controls involving cash.

Principles of Accounting II: This course is a continuation of the study of Financial Accounting at an introductory level. Students will cover additional material related to: assets, liability, and owner's/shareholders equity accounts, accounting for partnerships, and corporations, uses of financial statements including Balance Sheet, Income Statement, Retained Earnings, and Cash Flow.

Employment Insurance Benefits (Human Resources Development Canada)

You may qualify for assistance:

  • If you are currently on Employment Insurance.
  • If you have been on a regular Employment Insurance claim in the last 3 years.
  • If you have been on a parental or maternity Employment Insurance claim in the last 5 years.
If you are currently on a claim that will expire before the course end date, your Employment Insurance benefits will continue through to the end of the course at 75% of your current benefit rate.

Assistance could include all or some of the following depending on your circumstances:

  • Tuition and books
  • Child care expenses
  • Gas allowance
If you are in receipt of Social Assistance, you may qualify for full or partial tuition assistance. You should set up an appointment and speak with your case worker.
